Empowering Your Child's Reading Strategies for Support. Strategies for Support. Tree with books lining branches
Establish a Reading Routine Have a consistent schedule: set a dedicated reading time. This should be in a quiet and comfortable environment that is free from distractions. Little boy with glasses sits reading a book
Predict and Infer. Use pictures and text clues to help your child make predictions and inferences. Prediction and inferential skill development enhances comprehension and engage your child's imagination. Mother holds little girl and reads together.
Visualization. Visualizing is when readers create mental images based on the text. When reading with your children, ask them to describe what they see in their mind's eye while reading. Monitor meaning throughout the text to ensure it is meaningful and enjoyable to the child.. Little girl lies on her back reading a book
Ask Questions. Before, during, and after reading, ask open-ended questions about the text to promote critical thinking. Ask questions that encourage discussion and deeper understanding of the text. Little girl walking while reading.
Vocabulary Development. The use of context clues helps the reader to understand unfamiliar words. Make sure you discuss the meaning of new words based on the surrounding text. It is a good idea to create a word journal or flashcards for new vocabulary. This can be used later for reinforcement.. Tree with a cut-out library inside
Encouraging Reading Fluency. Model fluent reading for your child. This involves demonstrating smooth and expressive reading, highlighting punctuation and phrasing. Repeated reading builds fluency. Repetition helps improve speed, accuracy and comprehension. Little girl lays on her stomach with head resting on hands while reading a book.
Happy National Maintenance Worker Appreciation Day! Today, we honor the hardworking men who keep our facilities running smoothly and safely. Whether it's keeping us comfortable by maintaining our HVAC units, ensuring our electrical systems run smooth, repainting our buildings, or responding to alarms in the middle of the night, they're always there when we need them. Let's take a moment to appreciate and recognize these unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes. 💪❤️ #MaintenanceWorkerAppreciation #ThankYou #UnsungHeroes #FacilityManagement #GCS #BetterTogether

woman with words “What really helps me thrive is the support of my teachers, administration, and counseling coach. There is no better feeling than when a child references something I have either taught them in class, or in session, and utilizes it - you know, when the content really impacts and sticks with them!”

school counselors help students thrive by...“...teaching them about having good character, navigating strong emotions, ensuring that every student can identify personal strengths, teaching them how to communicate effectively and problem solve inside the classroom and with their peers. I also spend a great deal of time teaching them about how to recognize and handle bullying, as well as how to set goals, increase self-esteem, and how to adopt a growth mindset.” “Students also thrive by learning how to recognize their emotions, normalize talking through them, and engage in self-regulation.” - photo of Haley Herndon, EV Elementary School Counselor
i know students are thriving when...“I hear them laughing with their friends, when I see them smile-really smile. When they are doing well in school, and that's not when they are making good grades or passing with flying colors, but when they are engaging, when they are present, when they are wanting to do better. When they have at least one good friend, when they have dreams and believe that tomorrow will be better, and that there is always a tomorrow.” - photo of Tonya Ridley, GHS School Counselor
