A group of students sits in folding chairs on a stage holding drumsticks, each playing on brightly colored practice buckets labeled with store branding. They wear matching dark T‑shirts, and stage lights cast warm colors across the curtains behind them. Additional students and percussion equipment are visible in the background, creating an energetic pre‑performance atmosphere.

Students at Highland Elementary School are experiencing a fun and engaging new opportunity this year through the development of the Highland Bucket Drumming Circle. The program was created by music teacher Abby Hurst and supported by Greeneville High School’s drumming instructor, David Widmaier.

The group performed on stage at NPAC alongside the GHS drumline during the Greeneville High School Band Christmas Concert. Students shared that the experience helped them build confidence, relieve stress, and explore whether they might want to join band programs in the future.

Through a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, the entire school will also have the opportunity to see Stomp at the NPAC in January, giving students a chance to watch professional percussionists in action.
